Sea Ice Extent for 2013
#1
Although I have posted that the volume of polar ice is the big number, and that the extent is a much more volatile number, here is the 2013 update. In short, up from last year but still well within the trend of the latest decades.

Quote:On September 13, Arctic sea ice reached its likely minimum extent for 2013. The minimum ice extent was the sixthlowest* in the satellite record, and reinforces the long-term downward trend in Arctic ice extent. Sea ice extent will now begin its seasonal increase through autumn and winter. Meanwhile, in the Antarctic, sea ice extent reached a record high on September 18, tied with last year's maximum. Please note that this is a preliminary announcement. Changing winds could still push ice floes together, reducing ice extent further. NSIDC scientists will release a full analysis of the melt season in early October, once monthly data are available for September.

On September 13, 2013, sea ice extent dropped to 5.10 million square kilometers (1.97 million square miles). This appears to have been the lowest extent of the year. In response to the setting sun and falling temperatures, ice extent will now climb through autumn and winter. However, a shift in wind patterns or a period of late season melt could still push the ice extent lower. The minimum extent was reached two days earlier than the 1981 to 2010 average minimum date of September 15.

This year's minimum was 1.69 million square kilometers (653,000 square miles) above the record minimum extent in the satellite era, which occurred on September 16, 2012, and 1.12 million square kilometers (432,000 square miles) below the 1981 to 2010 average minimum.

Comparing this year's minimum extent to 2012, while extent was higher on average this year, there were variations from region to region. There was considerably higher sea ice extent in the Beaufort, Chukchi, and East Siberian sea regions, with the ice edge several hundred kilometers farther south compared to last year. This year the Canadian Archipelago also retained much more ice, keeping the Northwest Passage closed. The most notable area of less ice this year compared to last was off the east coast of Greenland, south of Fram Strait. Other small areas of decreased extent were found north of the Kara and Laptev seas.
See an animation of this summer's sea ice extent produced by the NASA Scientific Visualization Studio at http://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/goto?4104.

* According to near-real-time data, this year's minimum extent is slightly lower than 2009. However, the ranking between 2009 and 2013 is close, and may change once the final version of the data are processed. See our Frequently Asked Questions: Do your data undergo quality control? for more information about near-real-time data.
** Note that the dates and extents of the minimums have been re-calculated from what we posted in previous years; see our Frequently Asked Questions for more information.

Charlie, I don't know you. If you meant this to be funny, its not. If you're serious, it is beyond ignorant.

Calling David Guyatt: you don't want ad homs. What is one to do with a post like this? Since your nemesis Charlie Drago has been "retired," posts like this are becoming far more frequent.

Lauren, Charlie Drago is not David's nemesis. Just a deeply flawed man and we are all flawed in some way. Charles may see David as his nemesis. I really don't know and don't care. Charlie Drago is presently hanging with his little mate Greg who sucks up and regurgitates all the Koch brother funded propaganda as the gospel truth and who thinks .3% of dissenting scientists is irrefutable proof that there is nothing happening with the climate. You've seen his posts here. You will note Charles never once criticised any of that. So the last thing Charlie would be doing if he were posting would be stepping in to give us some scientific clarity on this matter.

As for if this is a joke post or he is serious all I can say is I wish there were a sarcasm font. It would make like as a form moderator much easier. But there isn't as yet. If it is a joke I see no reason not to let him have his little joke. It is not against forum rules to laugh or think it bad taste. If it is not a joke or more importantly if you choose not to take it as one I look forward to your thoughtful rebuttal. But Charlie was never going to rescue you from this one even if he were posting.

I am saddened by this reply. Greg is a respected researcher. I do not agree with him on climate change. But I am also not a scientist. All I can do is read those who are. I have a very good friend who is and he believes it is man made. But Greg does not know any more than I know.
Charles is no longer here. So I take issue with who he is allegedly hanging out with. Or not. And why bring Greg into this at all?
Just what is going down on this forum?
It is said that CD was retired for crossing the line. But don't we all have to obey the rules?
I have barely come here at all today and now I do and am just sad.
Confused.

Dawn, take issue with it or not you know perfectly well he is and has for quite a while. And I'm saddened by Lauren's post and yours too. How does this contribute to the thread at hand? It was in reply to Lauren's comment re Charles that seemed to imply that if Charles were here he would have something to say to Charlie Prima's post which Lauren is unsure is a joke or serious. If CP is serious then he is voicing the same type of science that Greg uses. Charles never questioned Greg's use of dodgy science so why would he question CP's use of same? It was Lauren who brought Charles and David into this. Greg was brought into this because he is the one who spams the forum with the Koch bros propaganda which Charles has nothing to say on. Why, since you are asking about Greg, are you not asking why David was brought into this who really has absolutely nothing to do with this? Don't answer. Rhetorical question. Now can we keep this sort of crap off the forum and let Lauren and Charlie Prima get on with things? Thank you.

I will respond in another thread. What is behind my admittedly partly snarky nemesis comment is larger than Charlie Prima's post or about climate change or Greg or Charlie Drago. I think it is ultimately about why I think DPF had a flat tire and what can fix it.

I thought it was quite funny.

I'm new to this forum, and thus unaware of your religious quirks.

Perhaps you could endeavor to be less rude and insulting. It would benefit both you and the forum.

Religious quirks? And just how did I reveal my religious quirks? And what are they?
