Why do good people become silent, or worse?

We reassure ourselves that most Americans (65-75%) believe in a JFK assassination conspiracy, but what kind of conspiracy do they believe in? That's almost never asked in polls. Most of us at DP feel it was a high-level conspiracy, and my guess is that maybe only 20-30% of Americans agree with that. The rest will settle for the more comfortable plots (mafia, Castro, Texas oilmen, etc). This is why the articles posted above apply to both 9/11 and JFK.
