Hi Tracy,
As i said in my first post all my notes and files have been lost on Lemnitzer and Lemay, so I'm working from memory (trying to find everything again and re-save it) at the moment but he was only US Forces Europe Commander for a short time then became Supreme Allied Commander Europe in early 1963, not sure if this was a prior agreed upon position once he was removed as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs.
From memory I'm sure i read somewhere that he was touring some facility at the time of the assassination, it may have even been hospitals in Germany will keep searching for confirmation but it could easily be that he had flown from Paris (Fountainbleau) to German first then from Germany to the US direct.
Tracy posted "In Richard Cottrell's book on Gladio, he argues that Lemnitzer and the CIA were involved in the plots to kill the French President, and that's why De Gaulle wanted NATO out of the country".
I think DeGualle was just pissed that French generals werent getting key positions within NATO but if Cottrell is correct and there were CIA links to the attempts made on his life...you would think Lemnitzer would be in on, the need to know process and approve any activities.
If Lemnitzer had closer ties to the CIA then first thought we have another Joannides type situation because in 1975 then president Gerald Ford selected Lemnitzer to take part in a special panel to look into the CIA's possible activites on US soil.
AJ.
