I think the left-hand scope thing is a myth. It was offset that way because of the bolt-action and top-loading of the rifle. Wasn't the partial palm print found under the wooden stock, which means it was placed there when it was disassembled?
Yes, the whole Dial Ryder episode is very interesting.
