The "Red Queen" and "The White Knight" and MKULTRA

Hypnosis was extensively used, in combination with other methods, by the umbrella programmes known loosely as "MK-ULTRA".

Prof & Dr Louis "Jolyon" West, long time Director of the Neuropsychiatry Institute at UCLA and deep black shrink, said the following about his own human research into dissociative states.

The first page is stamped: "WARNING NOTICE: SENSITIVE INTELLIGENCE SOURCES AND METHODS INVOLVED". The first page includes the following words written by West:

"The literature concerning clinical entities ordinarily considered to constitute the dissociative reactions is fairly well limited to case-studies of patients with fugues, amnesia, somnambulisms, and multiple personalities.

"Unpublished studies by the writer have led him to a greatly expanded concept of dissociation. Dissociative phenomena are found in everyday life. Such manifestations include "highway hypnosis", states of "fascination" in flyers, hypnagogic and phantasy hallucinations, transient anaesthesias, and many other examples. These reactions have many features in common with a variety of clinical disorders including "sleep paralysis", trance states, Gilles de la Tourette's disease, latah, "Arctic hysteria", and a number of other disturbances in addition to the well-known dissociative reactions of the text-books.

"There is considerable experimental evidence pointing to the significant role played by dissociative mechanisms in the production of the various phenomena of hypnosis. In fact, hypnosis may be considered a pure-culture, laboratory controlled dissociative reaction. Of the entire phenomenology of the various states described above, there is not one single manifestation which cannot be produced experimentally in the hypnotic subject. Thus, through the use of hypnosis as a laboratory device, the dissociative mechanisms can be studied with a high degree of objectivity."

The available evidence strongly suggests that MK-ULTRA techniques frequently included the creation of post-hypnotic triggers. The precise way to trigger the behaviour originally implanted under hypnosis (and often trauma and/or narcosis), and the precise way to end the behaviour and trigger the subject out of their programmed behaviour and back to "normal" consciousness, would only be known to the programmer and their associates.

It was very important to ensure that the subject could not be randomly or accidentally triggered into the hynotized state, particularly if the programmed behaviour was, for instance, "pick up the gun and shoot at the person you are told to".

Colin Ross found examples of precisely this type of hypnotic programming whilst researching "MK-ULTRA" projects.

The known predecessor programmes to MK-ULTRA included BLUEBIRD and ARTICHOKE, and Ross found many documents which clearly reveal the ultimate intention of the projects. For instance:

A document entitled "Hypnotic Experimentation and Research, 10 February 1954", describes a simulation experiment of relevance to the creation of Manchurian Candidate assassins:

Miss (whited out) was then instructed (having previously expressed a fear of firearms in any fashion) that she would use every method at her disposal to awaken Miss (whited out) (now in a deep hypnotic sleep) and failing in this, she would pick up a pistol nearby and fire it at Miss (whited out). She was instructed that her rage would be so great that she would not hesitate to "kill" Miss (whited out) for failing to awaken. Miss (whited out) carried out these suggestions to the letter including firing the (unloaded pneumatic pistol) gun at (whited out) and then proceeding to fall into a deep sleep. After proper suggestions were made, both were awakened and expressed complete amnesia for the entire sequence. Miss (whited out) was again handed the gun, which she refused (in an awakened state) to pick up or accept from the operator. She expressed absolute denial that the foregoing sequence had happened.

If the programme hypnotically implanted is, for instance, of the type "enter trance state, pick up the gun and shoot at the person you are told to shoot at", I find it unlikely that the post-hypnotic trigger would be a playing card. The programme could be randomly triggered far too easily.

In my judgement, the "Red Queen" is more likely a fine literary device.

Just as Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" is first and foremost an exploration of Grace Slick's Lewis Carroll trip after ingesting magic mushrooms.
