Charles Bowden,in my opinion,is the best and most informed journalist covering the drug war in Mexico.

An Interview with Charles Bowden

War on the Border

By DAVID ZLUTNICK
Charles Bowden is an author and journalist whose work has largely focused on the US/Mexico Border region. His writing has especially centered on the Mexican Drug War and Ciudad Juárez, the border city known as the epicenter of Mexican drug violence. His critically acclaimed book, Murder City: Ciudad Juárez and the Global Economy's New Killing Fields, was published in 2010 by Nation Books. His latest work, edited along with Molly Molloy, is El Sicario: the Autobiography of a Mexican Assassin and was just released, also by Nation Books.
Bowden sat down for a video interview with me on June 30th, while in San Francisco for a speaking engagement. In his responses he argues the extreme violence seen in Mexico is a sign of a deeper societal disintegration resulting from governmental corruption, failed economic policies, and the War on Drugs. What follows is an edited transcript of our conversation.

War on the Border - Phil Dragoo - 28-07-2011

John Carman was a U.S. Customs officer for sixteen years. He resigned in 1998.

He founded customscorruption.com to expose abuses he and others had witnessed.

He was such an annoying whistleblower regarding evidence of selective enforcement allowing certain shipments to enter that he was (on the basis of fact and belief) framed, tried, convicted, sentenced and held in Federal prison from October 2007 through May of this year.

He had been selected for the Secret Service detail for the Ford White House over 1500 applicants 1974-1977, transitioned through Treasury mint officer, and his subsequent service as a Customs officer was exemplary.

He has observed corruption, posted his reports, contacted his supervisors, petitioned congress through Oversight and Judiciary members, and drawn increasing heat.

Presidents and their attorneys and their agency chiefs apparently don't want enforcementRamos and Compean vs. Aldrete-Davila and the Mexican government: George W. Bush's "good friend" Johnny Sutton gave the agents over a dime, and gave the mule immunity.

Now comes Jesus Diaz, Border Patrol agent facing the Johnny Sutton follow-on and the Mexican government:

And John Carman, former U.S. Customs officer:

Grassley and Leahy and Issa et al are asking the questions of ATF which need to be asked. I spoke with someone at Judiciary on behalf of John Carmanthese targets need bills of protection.

The border is not to be enforced; the drug trade is not to be interruptedthose who attempt to enforce the law will find themselves its victims.
