Bolivia gang "fought in Balkans"

LA PAZ - Two members of a mercenary gang said to have plotted to kill Bolivian President Evo Morales were veterans of the Balkan wars of the 1990s, reports say.

Three died and two were arrested in the eastern city of Santa Cruz after police fought a gun battle with the group.

Bolivian police officials said two of the five fought for Croatian independence. The three others are said to be Irish, Romanian and Hungarian.

They were said to be planning attacks on government and opposition figures.

Chief among the suspected targets was Bolivian President Evo Morales, but Vice-President Alvaro Garcia Linera and Santa Cruz Governor Ruben Costas, a bitter opponent of Morales, were also targeted, police said.

There has been no immediate explanation of why the alleged plotters would target government and opposition targets alike.

Costas has questioned the government's information, accusing it of "mounting a show" aimed at discrediting the opposition.

Revealing details of the alleged mercenary gang, police chief Victor Hugo Escobar said prosecutors were now seeking "clear and concrete information".

The group, suspected by authorities of being behind a dynamite attack on the home of a Catholic cardinal earlier in the week, was tracked down on Thursday to a hotel in Santa Cruz, some 900km (620 miles) east of the capital, La Paz.

The resulting shootout killed Magyarosi Arpak, a Romanian, and Irishman Michael Martin Dwyer, officials say.

The police chief named Eduardo Rosa Flores, 49, a Bolivian-Hungarian man also killed in the gun battle, as the ringleader of the group.

He fought in the war for Croatian independence in the 1990s where he commanded a paramilitary organization, reports said.

The two men arrested were named as Mario Francisco Tasik Astorga, 58, another veteran of the Croatian war, and Elot Toazo, a Hungarian computer expert.

Morales revealed the existence of the alleged plot as he travelled to Venezuela and Trinidad for regional summits.

He said intelligence reports had warned of an assassination plot by a group comprising foreign attackers intending to "riddle us with bullets".

Early reports from Bolivia's leftist government suggested the plotters were linked in some way to opposition movements in the country's lowlands supported by Costas.

But news that Costas was himself thought to be a target brought a clarification from government officials.

"The terrorist group has a strategy... not only against the president or vice-president, but other authorities as well," Deputy Interior Minister Marcos Farfan told Bolivian radio.

Here are some intriguing, if speculative, tracks in the altiplano....

From a Croatian military obituary:

Quote:
Anthony Mann Grant

Also recorded as Anthony Mann Grant, born on 27th March 1961, thirty year old Grant Mann was a former paratrooper and veteran of Northern Ireland with a love of dogs and motorbikes. He first came to Croatia in 1991, volunteering for a Croatian HOS unit known as Black Hawks, training Croatian recruits and fighting on the frontline in the Osijek area. He left this unit after a short period following a disagreement with the commander and fatefully joined the notorious International Company under the command of the former Spanish journalist Eduardo Rosa Flores. According to Croatian Ministry of Defence reports Grant was killed in Osijek on 23rd March 1992. Initially his family were told by a person claiming to have been his commander that Grant had died from a fatal chest wound received during an ambush.

(Snip....)

A subsequent British coroners inquest in 1994 ruled an open verdict and hypothesized that Grant may have been killed by someone on his own side, whether unintentionally or intentionally. He had been shot in the back of the head with a pistol at close range. His execution was rumoured to have been ordered by Flores and carried out by one of the nineteen foreigners serving in the International Company

From a blogger calling himself "Blackguard":

Quote:
I was absoloutely horrified when I came across this film that is currently being made starring Vinny Jones as Arkan, on the imdb website and it was described as the story of Eduardo Flores LEGENDARY international brigade, "defending" a village in the Yugoslav civil war.

Eduardo Flores was easily as bad, if not worse than his nemesis the also truly evil Arkan, the Croatian international brigade was made up almost exclusively of Neo Nazis from the U.K, France and Germany.
If as is suggested on the imdb Flores is depicted as a hero this will be another huge insult to ALL the peoples involved in the various conflicts in the Balkans.

Flores is heavily suspected of murdering a Swiss reporter and British photographer as well as his other various war crimes, but it seems as usual yet another film maker will address the subject of war in the most simplistic cowboy and indian terms, depicting the Serbs as unhuman and evil ant the Croats as noble and righteous.
I would recommend the superb BBC documentary the dogs of war for anyone interested in finding out more about "The legendary?" Eduardo Flores Neo Nazi militia group in the Yugoslav civil war, but it seems it has been buried by a BBC eager to bury ANY news item that might contradict the Western (nato and UN) account of events.
I struggle to find anything positive about violent facism.

R.I.P. Eduardo Rózsa Flores? (none / 0)
The speculations in Hungarian media threw up one illustrious name as potential victim: Eduardo Rózsa-Flores. That would be a fitting end to a very strange life.
Rózsa-Flores is a son of Hungarian communist Jews who fled to South America from the Nazis. All of them (parents, child) was involved in the movements supporting President Allende of Chile. So after Pinochet's coup, they were among those put on a plane to Europe; they returned to Hungary.

Young Rózsa-Flores ended up in a special unit of the border guards; he was one of the minders of Carlos the Jackal when he used Budapest as a hideout. Still a faithful communist, he fell out with his commmanders, and became a journalist during the 1989-90 changes.

Then, covering the outbreak of the Yugoslav wars, he saw the operations of the JNA. Then he finally broke with communism, only to swing the other way. He decided he doesn't want to stay an observer anymore, and became a mercenary for the Croatian army.

Later, he though he'll search his roots in Israel, but came awaywith hate seeing the treatment of Palestinians. This led him straight into the open arms of the anti-Semitic Hungarian far-right (yes, you read that right).

In 2001, a film titled Chico was made about his life (thankfully excluding his then new far-right endeavours), in which he played himself remarkably well.

From supporting Allende to plotting a murder on Moráles, would be coming a full circle (if the rumour will be confirmed).

Re: R.I.P. Eduardo Rózsa Flores? (none / 0)
Based on reports in Bolovian media, it's almost certain that not only was Rózsa Flores among the killed, but he must have led them, as the other four (two killed & two arrested) were under his command in the Croatian International Brigade.

Bolivian police said the three men, killed in the eastern city of Santa Cruz, and two others who were arrested were part of a wide plot by "mercenary cells" to assassinate public figures, commit terrorist acts, and possibly overthrow Bolivia's government.

The dead are believed to be 49-year-old Eduardo Rózsa Flores, Santa Cruz-born son of a Hungarian father and Bolivian mother; Árpád Magyarosi, a Romanian-born Hungarian; and Michael Martin Dwyer, an Irishman. The Bolivian government said Mr. Magyarosi, who has a song he wrote featured on a Hungarian Web site, was a sniper, and that Mr. Martin was an expert in martial arts and weapons.

Two other men, Hungarian Elód Tóásó, and Bolivian Mario Francisco Fardig Astorga, were arrested in the operation. Another man reportedly fled the scene.

In a statement, Interpol said it was checking on the identities of the men, including comparing them to a database of stolen passports. The agency said it also was willing to carry out comparisons of DNA and fingerprints of the suspects. The Irish consulate in La Paz referred all calls on the matter to the Irish government in Dublin.

According to La Razon, a newspaper in La Paz, Bolivia's president said that "what we want to know now is who paid, who contracted these foreigners." Government suspicion immediately fell on opposition groups in Santa Cruz, a province that has led a campaign for autonomy from Mr. Morales's government, and where police also claimed to have seized a large number of weapons on Thursday.

The Facebook page of Michael Dwyer was still active today amid confirmation that the 24-year-old was one of those killed in a Bolivian shoot-out on Thursday.

Mr Dwyer was one of three people killed in a hotel room gun battle in the city of Santa Cruz in mysterious circumstances. He stands accused by Bolivian authorities of having been part of a gang plotting to kill Bolivian president Evo Morales while his family in Tipperary said they were "shocked and devastated by the tragic death of a beloved son and brother".

Bolivian police said his passport was found after the shooting among his personal belongings.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has sent an official from Argentina to Bolivia in an effort to officially confirm Mr Dwyer's death.

One of Mr Dwyer's 324 friends on his Facebook account is Eduardo Rozsa Flores (49), one of the other men killed during the incident. Mr Flores is a Bolivian-Hungarian who fought in separatist movements in the former Yugoslavia. According to reports Mr Flores commanded a brigade in the Balkans after arriving there as a war correspondent in 1991. Magyarosi Arpak, a Romanian sniper, was also reported killed in the Santa Cruz incident.

Mario Francisco Tadik Astorga (58), reported to be a Bolivian-Croatian who also fought in the Balkans, and Elot Toazo, a Hungarian computer expert, were arrested and taken away for questioning.

Mr Dwyer's hometown is listed on the social networking site as Galway, where he took a course in construction studies at the GMIT. He finished studying six months ago. He is originally from Ballinderry, near Borrisokane, Co Tipperary where his family still lives. A family member last night confirmed that he had died in unexplained circumstances in Bolivia.

His Facebook page says his date of birth is June 15th, 1984, he is in a relationship and that his interests are shooting, music and cars. Pictures taken from his Bebo site show him dressed in military fatigues during combat adventure sports but pictures uploaded to his Facebook site in the last number of weeks are listed as holiday photographs taken in Bolivia and others taken at locations in Ireland.

He describes himself as a big music fan and says his favourite television show is The Unit , an American drama based on a top-secret counter-terrorism military unit. His favourite quote is “Don’t get involved in something that you cant walk out on in 30 seconds flat” from the film Heat, and "Just do what ya can today. Tomorrow is another day.”

As news broke of the Bolivian incident yesterday one simple message on his Bebo site read: “RIP Bro” before the page was changed to private. However, messages began appearing on his Facebook page today, with one reading: “Mick I can't believe it's true and you've been taken from us.

“My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Rest in peace my friend. I'll always remember the great times we had in Galway and will miss you. Xxxx”

Another said: “I love you cousin.. may you rest in peace. We all love you dearly… save me a place on the other side”.

An official from the Irish embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina arrived in Bolivia at midnight Irish time last night. A Department spokeswoman said this morning the situation was “quite complex” and it would be later today before any further details of the Santa Cruz killing emerged.

Mr Dwyer’s Facebook activity gave no clue as to why he may have been associated with the incident. A status update on April 9th last said he was “playing Motorcycle Madness and just achieved Level 6, Tricycle III”.

The family of an Irishman gunned down in Bolivia after an alleged assassination attempt on the president was foiled, say they do not believe he could have been involved in such a plot.

Bolivian forces killed Tipperary man Michael Dwyer (24) in Santa Cruz on Thursday, along with two others they allege were about to kill president Evo Morales.

But many Bolivians believe the group are the latest victims of a government stunt aimed at building Morales's support, and that he orchestrated the deaths in an unfounded claim that there was an assassination attempt against him.

Speaking from their home in Brocka, Ballinderry, Co Tipperary, Michael's stunned parents Martin and Caroline say they can make no sense of their son's apparent death.

"There is no way he would have been involved in anything like this," said Martin.

"Six months ago he was in college in Galway Mayo Institute of Technology. For something like this to happen, I just can't get my head around it," he added.

Michael's distraught mother, Caroline, added: "He was my baby. I don't believe any of this. Nothing they say makes sense."

An Irish diplomat was today on his way to Bolivia and the Department of Foreign Affairs has been in contact with his family to offer consular help.

Martin is understood to have left college after graduating from construction studies in GMIT six months ago.

Not being able to find work in his chosen field he ended up doing security in Galway before moving to Bolivia in October.

He phoned home from there in February to tell his parents he was staying on with the security firm he was working with until the end of the year.

But Bolivian police surrounded the Hotel de las Americas at 4.30am on Thursday, saying they were tipped off about armed men there.

And in an armed confrontation the suspects allegedly fled, blowing out windows in the complex with a grenade.

The three men killed were named as Dwyer, Eduardo Rosza Flores and Magyarosi Arpak. Another man was arrested.

It was claimed the group had been monitored until it launched a dynamite attack at the house of Cardinal Julio Terrazas in Santa Cruz last Wednesday.

Police say they seized weapons, computers storing information of city plans and a list of possible targets.

The government claim the group next planned to target the president, vice president and other officials.

But opposition leader Ruben Costas has alleged the killings were planned by Morales, who he says has previously declared a number of similar assassination attempts without providing any proof of them.

On Michael Dwyer's bebo page he is portrayed as a man with an obsession for guns and weapons, and in an online quiz on the site called 'which assassin are you?' he is decribed as being most like The Jackal, with his military position as a sniper.

He lists his favourite sports as kickboxing, pistol shooting and airsoft -- a game involving realistic looking weapons that fire small soft pellets instead of bullets.

He posted many pictures of himself on the site with such airsoft guns, as well as a picture of his latest distinctive tattoo on his left arm, the same tattoo that appears in photographs from the morgue in Bolivia allegedly showing Dwyer and his accomplices.

Here’s a little bit of history kiddies: During the second world war the Serbs fought AGAINST the Nazi invaders, while the Croats JOINED THE NAZIS and were infamous for their brutality towards their prisoners that evened sickened their Nazi allies.Fast forward to the end of WWII and many Nazis (and their allies) fled to South America - including those the CIA relocated after “Operation Paperclip”. The U.S. backed dictatorship in Bolivia gave the Croatian refugees(?) land in the media-luna region. Fast forward to the independence of apartheid Rhodesia, which became the independent nation of Zimbabwe in April 1980. The at-the-time U.S. supported dictator of Bolivia also gave the racist Rhodesian immigrants land in the media-luna region to populate, farm, and “whiten the country”. Fast forward to now. Many of the leaders of the opposition to Evo Morales are Croatian and Rhodesian Bolivians. Hmmm? Three mercenaries were killed: one Irish, one Rumanian, and a Bolivian of Croatian descent. Two mercenaries were captured, one a Bolivian ex-military who was living in Croatia, and a Hungarian naturalized Croatian. See where I’m going?

LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) — Bolivian officials were investigating Friday who financed a plot to assassinate President Evo Morales and what an international group of alleged mercenaries — including two fighters from the Balkan wars — were doing in Bolivia.

Among three men killed and two arrested in a dramatic police shootout in the opposition bastion of Santa Cruz, at least two suspects fought for Croatian independence, according to government officials.

Bolivian police closed in on the group Thursday in the eastern city, sparking a dramatic gun battle as the suspects fled to a downtown hotel and blew out its windows with a grenade.

Police commander General Victor Hugo Escobar identified the dead ringleader of the band as 49-year-old Eduardo Rosza Flores, son of a Hungarian father and Bolivian mother.

Rosza commanded a brigade in the Balkans after arriving there as a war correspondent in 1991, according this his personal Web blog.

The firefight with police also killed Magyarosi Arpak, a Romanian sniper, and Michel Martin Dwyer, an Irish expert in martial arts and weapons, the police commander said.

Police arrested Mario Francisco Tadik Astorga, 58, a Bolivian-Croatian who also fought in the Balkans, and Elot Toazo, a Hungarian computer science expert.

They have yet to be assigned lawyers. Prosecutor Jorge Gutierrez said the suspects were presented before prosecutors.

The group was monitored for some time until it launched a dynamite attack at the house of Cardinal Julio Terrazas in Santa Cruz on Wednesday that caused no fatalities, Deputy Government Marcos Farfan Erbol said Friday.

Police seized an arsenal, personal computers containing city plans of Santa Cruz and La Paz, the capital, and a list of possible targets, Escobar said.

The government said the group planned to attack the president, vice president and other authorities and personalities, including Santa Cruz Gov. Ruben Costas, a leader of political opposition to Morales.

It was unclear why a group of alleged anti-Morales assassins would attack Costas or Terrazas, who also is known to support the president's opponents controlling much of Bolivia's farm and natural gas wealth in the lowland east around Santa Cruz.

But Costas questioned the government's information, saying it was "mounting a show" to discredit the opposition.

Santa Cruz and three other states have adopted measures seeking greater autonomy from Morales' central government.

Morales has accused Costas of fomenting anti-government violence after rioters in September seized state buildings to block a vote on a new constitution. Eleven people died in the skirmishes, and a U.N. report found the president's political opponents responsible.

Morales ejected the U.S. ambassador and Drug Enforcement Administration officials over accusations that American diplomats had supported the opposition. He also claimed that the U.S. organized groups to assassinate him. Washington denies those charges.

At 4:30 a.m., police surrounded the Hotel de las Americas in downtown Santa Cruz, the capital of Bolivia's anti-Morales east. They'd been tipped about armed occupants in two of the rooms; and when they went to check it out, say government officials, they were met with gunfire. They returned it and killed three of the five men in the rooms, wounding the other two. According to Vice President Alvaro Garcia Linera, authorities were then led to Santa Cruz's convention grounds, where they found an arsenal of sharp-shooter rifles, grenades, C-4 explosives and other heavy weaponry.

More important, Garcia said, they also discovered maps and documents showing that the group the men in the hotel allegedly belonged to had been stalking the caravans of high-ranking government officials and plotting assassination attempts. Vice Minister of the Interior Marcos Farfan said the documents indicated that two members of the group were present when Morales handed out land titles to indigenous Guarani in Santa Cruz province last month — and that they'd supposedly abandoned a scheme to plant a bomb at a recent Morales recent cabinet meeting near Lake Titicaca. More ominously, said Garcia, "we also found documents that speak of future preliminary preparations for an assassination of the President and Vice President."

Kosovan ex-PM expelled from Colombia

Former Kosovan prime minister Agim Ceku has been forced to cut short a visit to Colombia because of a warrant issued for his arrest by Serbia. Mr Ceku was attending a conference in Colombia when he was expelled. The authorities were not willing to arrest him.

Serbia wants to put Mr Ceku on trial for war crimes.

He was the highest commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army, or UCK, which carried out a violent campaign against the Serbian security forces at the end of the 1990s.

At the time Kosovo was a province of Serbia, but it has since declared its independence.

Well-connected dogs of war, with substantial caches of weaponry, are turning up all over South America at the moment....

Quote:
"Some French dude named Laurent Bocquet (above, from his 'feibu' page, as we say down here) got arrested trying to escape Caracas, Venezuela, and get to Isla Margarita on Friday. He was nabbed along with Omar Campusano, Diomedis Campusano and Edgar Florián Sánchez (all from The Dominican Republic). All four are supposedly members of the criminal gang known as "The Internationals" (oh how subtle). So when police checked out the arrested Frenchie's house in Caracas they found:

* half a kilo of C4 explosive
* flame throwers
* 5,000 (yeah, five thousand) shotgun cartridges
* bullet-proof vests
* military uniforms
* foreign licence plates
* 3 FAL weapons
* 2 machine guns
* 3 shotguns
* telescopic sights
* etc etc

Expect Venezuelan police to be called human rights offenders for daring to arrest foreign nationals like this on their soil. I mean, the impertinence...what's half a kilo of C4 between friends anyway?

UPDATE: Venezuela's Interior Minister has given a presser this afternoon to name the group as a "terrorist organization". Minister Tareck Al Aissami also said that Bocquet is known as an expert in military matters and a sharpshooter/sniper who saw action in Europe (the exact country wasn't mentioned). Here's a quote from Al Aissami:

"We can testify that the type of armaments used by these military terrorist organizations are for actions of destabilization. With this find we have no doubt in telling the country that we have dealt a severe blow to terrorism and to those groups that try to drag Venezuela into scenes of blood and confrontation."

Venezuela says weapons cache uncovered, 4 foreigners detained in suspected terrorist cell

RACHEL JONES | Associated Press Writer
8:14 PM EDT, May 9, 2009

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuelan police uncovered a cache of weapons and explosives at a Caracas apartment and later detained four foreigners on suspicion of planning terrorist acts, authorities said Saturday.

While announcing the detentions, Justice Minister Tareck El Aissami accused foes of President Hugo Chavez of "looking for violence," although he did not link the case to the political opposition. Chavez has repeatedly charged that the opposition is plotting to assassinate him or spur his ouster.

El Aissami said a police raid Friday on an apartment near the capital's center found C-4 explosive, electric detonator systems, thousands of cartridges, and 14 rifles of different models, including five with telescopic sights, five with laser sights and one with a silencer. Documents and a computer found there were being studied, he said.

"This type of military arsenal is used for military actions and operations, with the precise objective of wiping out adversaries," he said.

Without giving any details, El Aissami said the discovery led to the detention of three citizens of the Dominican Republic — Luini Omar Campusano de la Cruz, 38; Edgar Floiran Sanchez, 29; and Diomedis Campusano Perez, 31 — and a Frenchman, Laurent Frederic Bocquet, whose age was not given.

El Aissami said Bocquet was believed to be a member of the military "of a European country" as well as "terrorist organization." He did not identify either.

Venezuelan authorities gave heavy blow to terrorism
Saturday, May 09, 2009

May 09 2009, 18:07 Caracas, 9 may (PL) The Venezuelan authorities gave a hard blow to a terrorist group that sought to drag the nation of blood and scenes of confrontation, said today the Minister for the Interior and Justice (MRIJ) Tareck The Aissami.
The Aissami statements were made at a press conference 24 hours after the Metropolitan Police seized an arsenal of weapons used for operations with precise objectives.

Among the stash of 500 grams were recorded C4 explosives, a cable segment electroconductive, 11 electrical detonators for explosives, 19 thousand 721 cartridges of various calibers, 14 rifles of various models, including five with telescopic sights and an equal number with peepholes laser with a silencer.

In addition, five 12-caliber rifles, three machine guns, four guns of various calibers, 51 cacerinas firearms of different calibers, two bulletproof vests, 11 radio transmitters, three portable radios point to point, and a radio base equipment computer.

Facsimiles were also confiscated 10 guns of various calibers, six plates of foreign registered vehicles, ammunition reloaders, a gas mask, seven cell phones, command a knife nine Packaging wildfire.

So far four people were arrested and identified as Luini Campusano Omar de la Cruz, Edgar Sanchez Floirán; Campusano Diomedis Perez, of Dominican nationality, and a French name Frederic Laurent Bocquet.

Bocquet is a trained military sniper in the area that formed part of the army of a European country not mentioned, said Aissami.

The owner of MRIJV did not rule out further arrests under the newly initiated investigations, and called terrorist organizations not to play with the hope of the people, nor with the change process in Venezuela on the path of peace and democracy.

He added that the various security agencies are deployed to stop any threat that seeks to attack the people and the president of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, said the Minister.
